Post 15....LAST ENG 104 POST!! AHHHH
Within the time that I have been in ENG 104 I think that I have improved on one really main thing. When I started writing my first papers and my first blogs I would just kind of write what I had to say and then that was it. Towards the end of the semester I really started elaborating more and really explaining myself. As I gave further detail, it gave me more ideas and essentially was easier. On the other hand, I still am a huge procrastinator. I think I will always be like that but hopefully I can slowly make some improvements. Another one of my flaws is organization. I am one of the least organized people ever. I don't know where any of my old papers are for any of my classes. I tend to put something down and then forget where I put it. The only thing in the class that I would suggest changing is more in class group work. I know that I am not outspoken at all and I think that in order for me to be more vocal in discussions I have to be comfortable with the people in the class. Maybe if there were more of the group work activities that we did in front of the class at the beginning of the semester then I would have been more apt to speaking up. As for the assignments, I thought they were all easy to understand and if I didn't understand I could just look at sample work, but as for the final mini ethnography profile, I have no idea about websites or anything. It took me about 15 minutes to figure out how to put a picture on my page. I think that the conferences were good and I think that 2 was enough because it was right at the right time in the semester.

Poetry Reading- Extra Credit
When I first came into the library I had an assumption that the reading was just going to be a couple people reading poems. I had never been to one before so I really didn't know what to expect. It was a really relaxed atmosphere and everyone seemed layed back. I always thought that everything would be planned out but it was kind of here is your time limit do what you want. It made it really interesting to hear what was going to be presented. Some of the poems were really short and very emotional and some were kind of longer and funny. Just to see how everyone presented there pieces and the different kinds of poems and writings there were was very interesting. It seemed like the crowd was into in because it was all kind of personal and well presented to the audience. Everyone could relate to something that was said.

I think that the best piece of writing that I have done in this class is the Exploring Subcultures paper. Other than having the highest grade, I felt like I really knew what I was talking about. On the other papers I had an understanding of what I was supposed to be doing, but I wasn't exactly sure of how I was going to tie everything together and what I was going to say. When I started out writing my rough draft about my subculture, I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to say, what stereotypes there were, and how I was going to portray everything. I felt the most comfortable writing my first paper. Not only was it my best writing, it taught me a lot about how I was going to construct my final mini ethnography. When I wrote my annotated bib and my literature review I always had my first paper to fall back on and to see what I wanted to say and how I was going to change somethings. My final piece has been altered a lot from what I originally wanted to say, but now I have it narrowed down to the most important information.

When I think of that day, I think of the sunny, clear skies that hovered overhead; I think of the parking lot jammed full of car, which were at one point jammed full of people hoping to get in a few rounds on this gorgeous day. I myself was with a group of 8 or 9 friends, and we were there for the same reason. The group represented almost every skill level: we had at least 2 really good players, 4 or 5 'once-in-a-whilers,' and 2 almost complete beginners. While we were talking, the archers’ were still shooting their competition. All of the sudden, I hear, “Oh, Shit!” This was uncommon during business hours, because there are “NO PROFANITY” signs everywhere in the shop. The team I had lead for 4 years to share to bittersweet feeling I had held within me and to understand how much they and the sport meant to me. All of this show the incredible closeness that lies within the community. Some say blood is thicker than water; not in the case of this community.

It was the first SIU softball game that I had ever been to because it was my sister's freshman year. The season had just started and was about to play there first game. I didn't really know what to expect because I didn't know there background or how good they would even be. The first two batter for the SIU team both were out and it was time for my sister to bat. My family was on the edge of there seat and seemed very nervous for her. The other fans on the bleachers were just watching the game without any idea of how good my sister was going to be and watching anxiously to see what she would bring to the table. The pitcher was winding up and the pitch was delivered, then all of the sudden BOOM my sister hit a homerun on the first pitch of the first game of her freshman year. The crowd went wild and my mom literally started crying. From there on out my sister was a strong asset to the team and everyone had high hopes for her. Now, when I watch her play and go to her games I'm always excited to see her because she is very good and I am proud to call her my sister.

When I think of the word rhetoric, to me it means being able to talk or write well. I think that if you can use words efficiently and be able to communicate with others, that is rhetoric. I guess what constitutes rhetoric is essentially the way a person speaks, but when you look more into detail it can be assumed if a person dresses well or holds themself together in a good manner because rhetoric is a way of communicating and if you have good communications skills you must be educated well. So, someone that has there stuff together could be assumed as rhetoric. I've never heard anyone just talk about rhetoric during everyday conversations, but it always seems to emphasized in English classes and speech classes. Well when you first hear the word rhetoric it is used in a postivive way, but when you hear it more and more and are maybe being critiqued on it a few years later, I would say it is negative because you should already be able to understand what the word means and how to use it. I definitely think that there is a rhetoric that comes with my subculture. If you don't know the rules of softball or the way that the game works, you're out of the loop. Another kind of rhetoric that the team itself has that not many people outside of the team know are signals. The coaches relay signals for what to do when they are up to bat and give signals to the catcher to give to the pitcher to relay what pitch to pitch. In my final parts in constructing my ethnography I think that I might need to give a little background on the rhetoric on the team. Meaning, if I find myself using certain words that might not make sense to outsiders I will give them a little definition off the side so that they understand what I am saying.

I wouldn't say that my writing process has necessarily changed since I have started the semester, but I am more conscious about my writing. Before I started writing about the same topic I would just write and be done with it. Now, since all of my information is linked together I feel myself reading over what I'm typing and I can pick up my tendencies. I've noticed that I use commas a lot to connect fragments and that I use the same words a lot. I don't think that any problems came about from my writing process but I did have some problems with the annotated bib because it was something that I had never done before. I have done a works cited but never added extra information. Putting the summary with the website was a little vague because I would try to put only the information that I thought was important and initially my summaries were vague and needed to be more detailed to entail how I was going to use it. I wouldn't say that any of the assignments were unexpectedly easy, but after I got feedback from my rough drafts, it was a lot easier to rewrite and make the final draft. The reason I write is because it is really easy to observe, but it isn't easy to remember everything. I like to write because not only does it put the facts down on paper, but it helps me to understand. If I type something out that I don't really understand I can just go back and reread until it makes since. It is a lot easier to understand something, for me, in writing than by hearing. Also, I write information down that I know I will need. If I am on a particular subject that I know I had something written about, I can just go back and then my memory is triggered back to that and it is a lot easier to portray. Although it isn't anything life changing or dramatic, I hav found myself writing more via email. Before I came to college, I never sent emails. Now, I send them to everyone. From telling my mom a story to sending surveys to students, I write a lot more frequently. I think that I'm going to write more in the future whether it is just emailing or gathering information or even writing out a speech.

I haven't chosen exactly how I want to structure my mini ethnography together yet, but I do know that I want to inform the reader of different stereotypes right off the bat. So, I guess it will kind of be thematic in a sense of addressing the stereotype and then giving information on it. I think that whoever is looking up my subculture will probably have the same general thoughts about the team that most everyone will. Hopefully, what I put out there is helpful. I'm going to tell where I got my information, but I'm not going to jump right in with who my main informant is. I think that if I start by telling my story and observations and then let the reader know who my sources is, it may not lead to any bias. I want to talk about why I chose my subculture because I am really interested in it, and what my initial thought about it was before I began my research. I do want to take the reader through everything chronologically so that it may help them understand a little better or so that they can see all the observing I did to get my conclusion. Since most of my research and information comes from observation, that is what most of what I write about will entitle. I did talk to people and took some interviews so I will definitely add those when it seems the most appropriate. I haven't chosen exactly how I want to end the piece, but I know I want it to be something interesting and something that not many people would know about the team to kind of bring everything I wrote together. The structure that I think I am going to choose will be the best because I can't just mention a stereotype or random information without any backup. If I don't structure everything thematically then it will be a mess of random information without any connections.

I think that as a researcher I would just try to get a more diverse crowd, something maybe a little different then just the typical Brooklyn, Texas accents.
It seemed like all of the accents that they covered were the ones that seemed drastic to us and how we speak. I do think that people can turn them on and off but to us, it was just funny and seemed weird. I really don't think that the Midwest was really represented too well considering that they showed strong accents for peopled that were called hicks, but that was only in certain towns that were an exception. It may be more appealing if in the first clip if they would have given you a caption with the dialogue so that it would be that much more interesting to actually know what they are saying.
Language is really important in the sense of being able to understand and relate to people. Like the Italian guy said, he can use his stron tough accent to give him power since everyone has there stereotypes. It can be a comfort thing.

At my fieldsite I haven't really used a lot of interviews or asked a lot of questions. I have based all of my information, for now, on observation. Here and there I will get some insight from my informant, who is my sister, but I haven't directly asked any questions yet. When I go to my fielsdite I usually am alone just sitting on the bleacher watching the softball team play. My sister is on the team, but it isn't like I can talk to her while she is playing, so I just watch and wait. I'm really just an outsider when it comes to actually observing the players, but when they are done playing I get more into the mix.
My relationship with the informant is obviously close since we are related. Whenever I come visit though, I am her main priority, therefore I probably don't know a lot of stuff that goes on when I'm not around. Our relationship is strong in a sense that we can talk about anything. Basically we are like good friends that don't really hold anything back. On the other hand, she is close to some girls on the team and I have witnessed several times that she doesn't like to talk about anyone other players when I am around.
When my sister talks to me about anything I know that she's telling me the truth. She has no reason to lie or sugar coat anything. But, that is only when she wants to tell me stuff. I don't want to force anything out of her.

The hardest part of my research is probably trying to make connections from observing and talking to the team. It is kind of hard to assume some things without being bias. My sister tells me things about people and like everyone else would, I think about what she said when I see them. But since I have been trying to make a correlation between the players on and off of the field, I have to put all of that aside.
If I were to start over I think that there really isn't much that I could change except for my approach. When I started to write out my draft explaining what I was going to write about and how I was going to do things, I had a lot of ideas that only led me to some confusion and a lot of questions that I really wouldn't have been able to answer. After looking over everything I narrowed it down to only a few subjects. If I would have kept my subculture exploration a little more compacted and had fewer outsiders then I could have gotten a lot done sooner.
Keeping a blog has kind of helped me keep my thoughts straight. When we do in class work and write in our blogs I initially write one thing and then when we go over it I think of more things to add on. Also, I think that if i wasn't keeping track of everything I would be repeating myself frequently. Since I am typing something about every other day, I can pick out things that I am restating.
In preparing for my mini-ethnography I plan on writing my paper with everything I have already wrote about in my other drafts and then going back over my blog posts and checking over them to add any information that I haven't mentioned.

My readers care about this issue because they too have the same concerns. Everyone has an opinion about the stereotype of college athletes gettng special attention. Maybe my answers will help them get a better sense on the issue.
The readers will want to know facts about my subculture which is the SIU softball team. Besides from the normal boring statistics or bland facts, they want to know something special that isn't really known to a lot of information. Maybe, an inside look.
Obviously the readers already have a general idea of looking up information on the SIU Team since it is about 99% of what I am writing about. Aside from knowing they are a team, the readers may not know much more and that could be there reasoning for researching.
I want the readers to know facts about whatever they are looking into my written information for because if i give them false information that is really know help at all for them, and may portray the team in a negative way.
Depending on if the reader has a background with the team, they may be hard to persuade just because they might have there own opinions or may have more information than me depending on how much they know or have been around. If the readers are newcomers trying to just get a basic knowledge of the team and how it works, it should be pretty easy to persuade since they don't know too much already.
Readers may use the writing to base some kind of subculture off of it even if it isn't the same team. They may use it to compare or contrast or maybe just use some of the information I have written to prove something.

Through my research, the main theme that I see is a team. But instead of everyone being best friends with everyone, there are some cliques. Even though there aren't multiple people on the team that absolutely don't like each other, you can still tell who is close and who isn't by body language and overall communication. Although I see these friendships, it is only off of the field. When they are at a game or practice they all unite as one and there is no evidence of any dislikes.
Obviously everyone knows who they get along with and who they don't get along with, but the question of if this theme runs through the fieldsite by the members is absolutely yes. I mean since they are girls and girls seem to have to tendencies to gossip or talk a lot, if you ask a player how they feel about another player they will give you the truth. But since they are a tight knit group because they are always together, it is only natural for not everyone to get along and since they are a team, I received the vibe from them that even though they have disputes they are still closer to each other then they are to outsiders.
In the subculture I feel like I am closer in status to being an insider, but obviously I will never be called one of them. They seem to have gotten used to seeing me around and now they know me pretty well and I know everyone on the team opposed to my first couple days when I knew only a hand full and hadn't even seen some of the girls before.
I would say that my place in the subculture is basically self explanatory. I'm the sister of a player and a fan. Every one of the players knows each others families and they are all pretty comfortable being around each other. So, since I am a sibling they know me, but since I have been around a lot they have noticed me as a fan that watches them and cheers them on, noticing everything during the games, and I am family meaning that I was a shoe in to knowing everyone.

She has a blue cover on her laptop. It's kind of clear looking, transparent. It's a mac book.
It might be used to add color or to protect from any kind of damage. I've seen them before, but not all the same color. She may have chosen the color because she likes it, or it may have been given to her. There are different kinds of covers that I have seen people with, some vary in looks. I have a pink laptop, but it isn't a removable cover, the actual laptop itself is pink, so i chose the color when i ordered it.
Why did you choose that particular type of laptop?
Had to get a Mac for Education Program
Did you choose the color?
Chose white because it was cheaper, chose the cover
Where did you get it?
Ball State
Have you seen any other colors that you like more?
Purple
The colored laptop that she has was chosen by her and bought at Ball State. The actual laptop itself is white, but the cover she bought is a clearish teal blue. The reason she got a Mac is because it was required for her Education Major. There are a lot of different kinds and colors of laptop covers for a Mac and overall, she likes the purple ones the best.

The benefits I have gotten from visiting my fieldsite is all of the information I have found. I find out firsthand how things work and see interaction between different people. The things that I observe aren't anything that I could find in a book or on the internet. In return, I could give back to them my observations. Telling them what I observe about certain situations could maybe strengthen some of there relationships or maybe open there eyes to something that only an outsider would notice since they are all together a majority of the time. I'm contributing to the community by giving them my outside opinions, if they choose to take it. To the class, when I am finished with all of my research and have everything gathered, I should be able to easily share a lot about my subculture and what it is all about. Everything I have done from looking at sources, observing, and interviewing is teaching me a lot about my subculture, specifically the team, which can be compared to different fieldsites in the future.

My first impression of my fieldsite was how much different is was then I was expecting. I grew up in the Lafayette, West Lafayette area so I was pretty used to Purdue's campus. When I went to SIU I was expecting to see about the same thing. Actually, it was very different. Since my subculture is collegiate sports, but mainly softball, I had to see the field. Instead of being surrounded by baseball fields and other sports complexes, it was right in the middle of some dorms and other big buildings. All of the campuses that I had prior been to were never set up like that. So my first real impression was how the softball field was right in the middle of the everything, so you feel like you're always in the action.
I felt a little uncomfortable because it seemed like such a common ground for all the students and players, but for me coming in as an outsider, I kind of felt like I didn't belong just because I had never been there before, let alone wouldn't have even know where it was without direction. Also, during the games I saw some fans that I could assume had been there several times before. Since it was my first time, I really didn't know anyone that was playing except for my sister. I found out that there had been fans there that didn't even have any relation to anyone on the team, they just enjoyed the games.
I know I am an outsider because I'm obviously not on the team. They have there own thing, and the closest I can get to being an insider is my observation, which really doesn't get me much further at all. I don't know all of the players, but over time I have met a lot of them and if I saw them on the street I know them well enough to talk to them. I can watch them bond while they are on there own time and see that they are really close. Since my connection with this subculture is my sister, she always finds a way to include me in conversation.

I am hoping to see if there is a connection between the interaction between the team off of the field and on field.

My subculture is College Athletics, but my main focus is the SIU Softball Team. Obviously, the focal point is the team. I have observed some players during socialization and just when they are doing there own thing. The players that I saw, are always with another person from the team. So, there is always some tie to each other. I'm looking forward to seeing how the others interact with each other, and if they always get along or if there are some of the girls that don't get along. Also, I'm going to observe while the team is actually playing. Hopefully, I will see some differnt changes in attitude. I think my own perspectives of how the athletes get extra attention might influence my thoughts. It might take a lot of supporting and dominant facts to persuade me to the other side.

The only place that I have visited recently was my friend's hometown of Kouts. It is a tiny place with only one stop light and a Burger King. There literally was nothing but open land and houses. I grew up in a nice sized town, so there was a pretty big difference. The closest place to entertainment for them is the city of Valparaiso. Literally, everyone in her neighborhood was friends. It was just like you would see on TV. All the mothers would talk on the phone and walk over to each others houses and gossip about everything that had been going on. I got the sense that everyone knew everything about everyone. The high school my friend went to was K-12, so they only had about 40 students in there graduating class. As I proceeded to meet her friends, it was almost like I wasn't welcomed because they had been friends forever. In comparison to my high school, I don't even talk to most of the people I was friends with, but they are still best friends and still want to be in high school. It was just weird to see how coming from a college town to a small town how drastic of a change there is.

Since I have observed my fieldsite, I need to ask some questions now. After getting a feel for the way that the team I am studying acts, now I want to get a look at them while they are actually in action. I hope be able to see them during a game. More information that I may need will mainly come from my sister's answers. I don't really have much to find or look up on the internet. The only real site I will use is the team's actual web page. Hopefully, I can get some more inside information and observations that will help answer my initial questions and bring the whole piece together.

When I think of my childhood the most dominant memory that comes to me is my princess tent. I had a pink tent that had all of the Disney Princess' on it. My sister and I would always play in it and act like we were camping, when we were really in our basement. Everyday when we got home from school we would hurry downstairs to set it up. I remember the way that we acted like the brown carpet was dirt, and if my cat would rub against the outside of the tent we would act like she was a bear. When we set the tent up we got a huge whiff of a plastic smell. I still think of it when I get a smell of something plastic.
After awhile of playing in our tent we became accustomed to the routine of putting it up, playing, and when our mom came home. Everyday before we could eat dinner we had to put the tent away and then wash our hands. Since this happened almost everyday, the sound of the door opening had the same effect on us as dad telling us it was time to eat. We automatically put the tent away, washed our hands, and went upstairs for dinner.
I can only think of a few places that really stood out to me from my younger years, but I always remember playing in the tent with my sister and the way that the carpet was dark brown, the tent smelled like plastic, my cat was a "bear", and dinner was ready when I heard the sound of the door opening.

I feel this is an ethnographic study more than a work of entertainment because there was a core group of people that controlled everything and didn't care about what everyone else said, they did it for themselves. The subjects of the interview were the actual finders of the surfing and skateboarding culture. They started a shop and made there own surfboards and skateboards. They are important because it is there story and they made everything happen the way it did. All of them were really trustworthy of each other but not of other people. Basically, they were a clique of kids that all worked toward a common goal and didn't let anything or anyone stop them from there dream. They were a subculture because they kind of expanded on surfing and skateboarding to make it there own. The interview was organized be asking the question and then listening to what everyone had to say and see how they all felt about it and get there opinions which gave you a good sense of how everything happened. Some stereotypes of skaters is that they are kind of punk and do what they want, basically they are troublemakers. I think that the reason that they have this label is because they have there own style and they don't care what everyone else says or things except for each other. They are kind of like "bad boys" and who doesn't want to be a bad ass? I trust what the documentary said because it wasn't based on what one person said, it was on everyone that was there at the time. It was really interesting and made me feel like I knew how they felt in some situations. The whole documentary was held together with interesting facts, interviews, and music.

As of right now I can't make any conclusions because most of the things I am looking into are stereotypes. My subculture will be about the same no matter where I go. Since I am looking at a college team, I think that standards will nearly be the same. Obviously not everyone is going to be exactly the same and if everyone had different beliefs and religions, it really wouldn't have much to do with the treatment the team gets on and off of the field. When I get a further look, I might come across something that isn't so universe for every school.

Privileges
-Age : I am in the same age group as the participants that I am observing
-Gender: The field site I am studying will be mainly girls
-Family: My sister is my main observant
-Environment: I am able to go to the site whenever I need to
-Freedom: I can ask anything and they in return can say anything
-Education Level: I have the knowledge needed to interpret information and compare
The privileges I have obtained were all given to me from birth. My age group and education level go hand in hand for relating to my participants. We are all in college so we are about the same age. Since I am a girl and the subculture I chose is dealing with a softball team, I will be surrounded by other girls which will ease any awkwardness or tension dealing with the environment in which I will be observing. My sister is my main observant so it seems like I have a lot of room to move with the subject, meaning that we are close enough to ask and answer any questions.

So far, I haven't gathered too much information. I know that I am going to visit my sister this weekend and that will give me a lot more to work with. I have talked to her on the phone briefly but I really only went over with her what I was going to be doing. I'm going to be asking her how her softball schedule works with her classes, and what conflicts arise. Also, I'm going to be asking my other participant how college life is different now that he isn't playing football anymore. I looked online at the team's website and just kind of glided over there academic achievements among each player. I think that the research I'm going to be doing is more nonacademic because I don't have facts, or statistics that I can get from books and articles, I'm going to be basing most of everything on there opinions.

The subculture I've chosen is College Athletics. The fieldsite I will be visiting is SIU. My sister goes to school there and is on the softball team. Also, her boyfriend also attends school there and is a graduate of Purdue, where he played on the football team. When I go to visit I expect to see the team at practice and on there off time. I want to get a feel for how college life differs for them than for non athletes. Also, I want to get a male's perspective on college sports, good and bad.

The subculture I've decided on is College Athletics. When I was in high school I played sports and they are still very interesting to me. I went to a school that had many athletes continue there career in college. One of these athletes was my sister. Another, my best friend. Lastly, another was one of my other close friends. The good thing about knowing these people and being able to get insight on how college athletics works is that, my sister is now in her junior year, so she has been around a while and has the hang of things. On top of that, she loves it. My friend, is a current freshman approaching her first season. She, on the other hand, doesn't like it as much and may even consider quitting. My last source will bring more diversity to the group because it is an already graduated male.
The only problem that I may come across is that since I am so close to them I don't want them to alter somethings that they may say to other people. Also, I don't want them to take advantage of our relationship and leave out details.

I have some weird habits or tendencies that are reoccurring every time I start my routine of doing my hair when I get out of the shower. As soon as I get in my room I brush my hair until all the knots are out, then I use my comb to part my hair to the side and if the part is slightly off or doesn't look right then I redo it until it looks like it always does. After I have my hair parted and combed straight then I sit on my bed with my tv on and I listen to music on my laptop with my headphones in while I blow dry my hair. I dry my hair in sections and then push it over to the side so that I get all of it dry. When it's all dry I pick up my laptop and carry it to my dresser where my mirror and hair straightener is. I keep my head phones in while I straighten my hair. First, I straighten the top layer of my hair and then I put it all up in a ponytail with only a little bit of hair down, then I straighten that part, followed by pulling more hair out of the ponytail out until it's all straightened. After it looks the way I want it to I run my fingers through it and voila the finished product.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to continue the same routine my entire life because I have been doing it as long as I can remember even upon moving to new places. If anything is different in my routine, it feels like something isn't right all day.

The last paper I wrote in ENG 103 was my favorite. We were able to pick the type of paper that we wanted to write. I chose to write an analysis. I wrote about the movie Juno. Since I was interested in my topic I didn't wait until the last minute to write it, like I usually do. I watched the movie all the way through and then highlighted on the main parts after the movie was finished. I used these highlighted scenes as a starter for the actual paper and also for a rough draft. When I wrote the final draft I watched the movie in sections and wrote as certain things happened. Whether it is the movie playing or my roommate talking to me, I always have to some kind of noise. I can't concentrate when there is silence and find myself easily distracted. The weird thing about this is that I was the complete opposite in high school.
The difference to me between editing and revising is that when you edit something you go through and look for mistakes. Whether someone else is reading the paper or you are proofreading, the mistakes are usually crossed out and suggestions are made. Revision is when you actually go through and rewrite the edited areas and piece them in with the paper.
